My Computers I
have always loved computers since my early years of playing Horace
goes Skiing on my brothers ZX Spectrum. I remember the day the Spectrum
was purchased. We all marched down to Currys to exchange a ridiculous
amount
I'm pretty sure my brother was emphasising the amazing amount of use it would be for his homework (clever boy) but I could be wrong. The result was endless hours of fun despite being on the wrong end of his tantrums for "distracting" him on a crucial level of some game or other. This would usually involve a swift slap on the bonce for moving/breathing/existing within a hundred miles of the TV. The Spectrum crashing was usually my fault also. I was creating an "electrical charge" by walking on the carpet too much. Eventually
we (sorry he) moved up to a Commodore 64. Commando was one of our
favourite games and as I was getting older, I could be trusted to fire
the grenades using the space bar. At the appropriate moment he would scream
"GRENADE!!" and if I didn't react within a split second of this
(or if I reacted too quickly) I was a dead man walking.
The end of level three where you had to storm an enemy camp resulted in
numerous palm thrashings for yours truly. I was never much of a console man as I could always think of much better ways to waste my youth. I then began to look at computers as tools rather than sources of tomfoolery. I progressed through to my current machine which I dubbed Conan the Destroyer due to the fact it was absolutely state-of-the-art in November 2002 when I bought it! I'm not knocking it though even if some geeks out there might laugh at its stats. I haven't really upgraded it much as I am yet to push it anywhere near to its potential. So I'll
stick with what I've got thank-you very much and the geek brigade can
go and adjust their firewire over Lara Croft for all I care. |
