Own Projects: Scenario 2

A modular PC 'laptop' for DJing MP3s and providing a much more affordable and easier to upgrade alternative to your conventional laptop.

I thought hard about the Mini-ITX route and it has its benefits (simplicity, size etc.). But it doesn't really pack much of a punch and can only deal with quite simple tasks. The most powerful VIA model is only about 1GHZ. Other more powerful models exist from manufacturers like Lippert but they are very expensive.

I just thought for the same money I could probably get a Mini-ATX motherboard which is still small, about 22x22cm and it will support up to a 2GHZ processor.

I would use this machine to do some DJing use Traktor DJ or something similar. I have thought about DJing for sometime but I could never be chuffed with beat mixing on decks. With MP3 I can make my own tunes and mix them with the old classics! I wouldn't have to carry around and store heaps of vinyl anymore either.

Aluminium camera case: can you imagine this as a portable computer?

Anyway I digress, the plan is to get a larger aluminium case, possibly a camera case and put the PC inside. Ideally I would like to mount a flat panel monitor on the underside of the lid so the case opened up into a larger than life comedy laptop. This may not be possible for space reasons. However, it remains my ideal scenario.

Good idea? Bad idea? Let me know.
