A Beginners Guide to Cycling in London (By a Beginner)

Watch the Road

I mean this literally! I may never get the chance to walk on the moon, but some days I feel I have cycled on it. It helps to watch the road surface as much as anything. If I am going to look over my shoulder (to change into another lane or overtake a parked car for example) I try to give the road surface ahead a quick scan as I don't want to hit a pot hole as I'm looking behind me.

I can't wait to get my front tyre into this pothole!

Any sort of debris should be avoided even if it's a plastic bag or a bit of card. You never know what will happen when you go over it. I also avoid braking when going over man hole covers as they provide very little grip. The same goes for road markings.
