Model 500 better know as 'Magic' Juan Atkins

Model 500 aka Juan Atkins is one of the true originators of electronic music particularly in the field on Techo which some argue, he invented. He is also one of the original Belleville Three, the others being Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, but the only one who refused to sit on his laurels. This is perhaps a little unfair to Saunderson who did make a brief comeback as
E-Dancer
but Atkins is the most prolific and also the most likely to challenge the established Detroit rulebook.

Despite making some of the classic Detroit techno records of all time including; No UFOs, Ocean to Ocean, Night Drive (Time, Space, Transmat) and Off to Battle, (all feature on his Classics collection ) he has not been afraid of change. His 1999 album Mind & Body is a fine example of this with influences from electro, hip-hop, R'n'B and drum and bass. Anyone who heard Aalyiah's Timbaland produced single Try Again would have been forgiven for thinking that it was produced by Atkins and from Mind and Body. It's a complete rip off in my opinion. When I first heard it on the radio I thought it was the latest Model 500 single!

Despite the fact he has been knocking around since the early eighties he has been ringing up the releases under monikers such as Cybotron, Audio Tech, Channel One, Infiniti, M 500, Magic Juan and Model 600.
